Go Skateboarding Day

A handful of skaters of all skill levels descended on the Pincher Creek Skate Park on June 21 to grind, jump and kickflip in celebration of Go Skateboarding Day.

Norman Gretchen was there with his store, Infamous BoardShop, to hand out prizes, T-shirts and other skateboarding swag.

Some of the more experienced riders performed trick demonstrations for the kids, riding the rails and jumping the ramps.

“There’s a couple kids we see back every year,” Gretchen said. “Seeing how excited they are whenever we come back makes it worth it.”

Gretchen, originally from Winnipeg, has travelled all over the country to pursue his passions: skateboarding and snowboarding.

He and Infamous got their start in Pincher Creek in 1999 when Gretchen opened his first board shop in the Ranchland Mall. Now the business has moved to Lethbridge, but Gretchen said Pincher Creek is his old stomping grounds.

“We wouldn’t be the shop we are today if it wasn’t for the awesome people of Pincher Creek,” Gretchen said. “I made some of my best and lifelong friends through the Pincher Creek skating community.”

This was the third year that Go Skateboarding Day has been celebrated in Pincher Creek with Infamous.

Go Skateboarding Day is an annual holiday created in 2004 by the International Association of Skateboard Companies. It’s held on June 21 as it is the longest day of the summer.

Gretchen and Infamous partnered with the Town in order to give kids a chance to come out and enjoy a day of skateboarding tips and tricks as a community.

“In smaller areas, kids don’t have as many things to do,” Gretchen said. “It’s exciting to be able to get these kids out skateboarding and using the skate park.”

Gretchen said he has no plans to stop helping host Go Skateboarding Day in Pincher Creek.

“We’ll keep coming back as long as kids are still having fun,” Gretchen said, “The community shows us a lot of love and that’s how I’m able to do what I love the most and share skateboarding with people.”
