Kadre Gray became the first Laurentian Voyageur drafted into the Canadian Elite Basketball League on Thursday night.
Drafted in the first round, sixth overall, the 22-year-old Toronto native will be joining a Hamilton Honey Badgers squad that finished a runner-up in the inaugural CEBL season, falling to Saskatchewan in the championship game.
Drafted as a U Sports developmental player, the door remains open for Gray to return to the Voyageurs in the fall for a fifth and final year of eligibility.
Gray’s first season with the Honey Badgers is scheduled to begin May 8 with a trip to Edmonton and will wrap up on Aug. 5 as they host the defending-champion Rattlers. The CEBL championship game is scheduled for Aug. 16 in Edmonton.
Several players from the CEBL also play in the National Basketball League of Canada, home to the Sudbury Five. Marlon Johnson and Jelane Pryce, forwards for the Five this season, were part of the championship Saskatchewan squad, along with former Sudbury guard Maurice Jones.
